Health care is one of the four fastest growing industries
in the region, projecting a need for 150,000 new employees
through the year 2006. The need for registered nurses alone
will grow by 21 percent. Previous shortages were about insufficient
numbers of health care professionals, whereas the current
shortage is about a demand for well-trained, highly competent
professionals to provide and maintain the "Standards
of Excellence" in our complex and highly technical medical
centers. Long Beach City College addresses these concerns
through its quality health care education and training programs,
experience with diverse students, support services to increase
licensing pass rates, and curricular focus on the integration
of basic skills and technology.
The School of Health and Science offers career ladder degrees
from Certified Nurse Assistant to Associate Degree Nurse as
well as Allied Health opportunities. The LBCC Office of Economic
Development woks closely with the School of Health and Science
to expand the industry linkages, ensure the continuous supply
of well-qualified new entrants into the profession, and provide
current employees with the opportunity to upgrade their skills.
