The transportation initiative at Long Beach City College
provides a comprehensive portfolio of educational services
for service technicians working in the dynamic transportation
sector. These services are direct at established firms that
want to certify and re-certify technicians, retain and hire
quality employees and keep up-to-date with today's ever-changing
technologies. The initiative is partially supported through
the efforts of the Advance Transportation Technologies Center
( ATTC), funded by Economic Development Network(ED>Net)
of California Community Colleges. The service of the initiative
included technical assistance, assessment, training, placement

Technical assistance |
| |
The transportation initiative, with the support of the ATTC,
can provide direct, technical assistance to business and industry
by helping to identify the best methods and equipment to support
Fleets utilizing alternatively fueled vehicles. These services
are designed specifically to assist companies in their efforts
to upgrade their technicians' certifications and maintain
compliance with the ever-changing regulatory environment.
Today's technicians need strong skills to operate tomorrow's
sophisticated equipment. Strong math, English, computer, and
workplace skills are basic requirements. The transportation
initiative provides assessments for current automotive students
as well as incumbent workers. These assessments are design
to help identify gaps in basic skills. By working with a client
service coordinator, employees can develop a scope of work
to address their basic skills challenges. The initiative also
provides employment assistance through pre and post employment
and placement services. These services help to support the
industry by providing counseling, training, and mentoring
services to help employers place and retain valuable employees.

Training is provided to support the changing needs of technicians
in the automotive and transportation industry. Short, not-for-credit
training can provide technicians with the information required
to be successful in their chosen industry. Training can target
specific skill deficits uncovered by an assessment or new
certification requirement while minimizing the impact of time
lost on the job. Employees also can take advantage of traditional
education by enrolling in one of four automotive programs
to secure an Associate of Arts (AA) degree. The programs require
the completion of a minimum of 41 units of instruction. All
educational services can be delivered on a contract basis
to organizations and employers who wish to receive closed,
on-site, or customized educational services.
